COLORADO RESOURCES
COLORADO DEPARTMENT OF EDUCATION
Colorado Services to Children with Combined Vision and Hearing Loss
Deaf-blindness occurs in three of 100,000 births. In Colorado, just over 110 children
and youth (ages birth through 21 years) have been identified as having both a vision
and hearing loss. These individuals are eligible for free technical assistance through
the Colorado Services for Children with Combined Vision and Hearing Loss Project, located
at the Colorado Department of Education. Services include:
State Consultants: Specialists in many aspects of vision and hearing impairments may be called upon to visit the home, school, classroom, and community to provide technical assistance (consultation, in-service training, program design and review) about effective teaching strategies and materials.
Newsletter: The project offers a newsletter called Vibrations, which is published and disseminated three times a year. The newsletter is free to all interested persons. Recent issues are posted on the project's website (see address below), as well as previous issues on such topics as interveners, parents, sibling relationships and friendships, transition, deafness and hearing loss, and vision impairment.
Other Resources: The project website also offers an annual census of Deaf-Blind students, and extensive list of Fact Sheets, a lending library, information about the summer family retreat, and links to national resources and other state Deaf-Blind projects.
